Mexico's swine flu outbreak affects national football team

Mexico's swine flu outbreak is continuing to hinder all parts of society, with football in the country now seriously being affected. Javier Aguirre, the country's new football coach, held a press conference with the 50-year-old joined by journalists wearing surgical masks. Aguirre's first competitive match in charge will be a World Cup qualifier away to El Salvador on June 6, but the health scare is causing problems for the new coach. "The difficulties include the question of our own players," he said. "This uncertainty in which the country is living, with empty stadiums, is not ideal." Growing fears over the outbreak have forced the cancellation of the remainder of the Concacaf under-17 championship in Tijuana. Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and the USA were due to contest the semi-finals of the youth tournament on Wednesday. Concacaf has also postponed the second leg of the Champions League finals between Cruz Azul and Atlante FC until May 12. The Concacaf beach soccer championship, which was scheduled to begin in Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday, has been delayed indefinitely.
