MEDIA: Ofcom receives complaints over racism in Big Brother programme

The media watchdog, Ofcom, is investigating more than seven thousand six hundred individual complaints about alleged racism on the Channel 4 program Celebrity Big Brother. A further 2000 have rung the Channel to complain. Viewers believe that the Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty is being targetted and bullied by housemates because she is Indian. The actress was branded a 'dog' by the disgraced former Miss Great Britain, Danielle Lloyd. Jade Goody's mother, Jackiey, repeatedly referred to Shilpa as 'the Indian' while she was on the show and claimed she could not pronounce her name. A spokesman for the show says 'Matters of bullying or racial abuse in any form are taken extremely seriously by Channel 4 and Endemol. Housemates are closely monitored at all times to ensure they have the appropriate support inside the house which includes being able to talk in confidence to producers. Shilpa herself has not voiced any concerns of racial slurs or bullying against her'.
