Man Tears Off Wax Hitler's Head At Madame Tussaud Opening In Berlin

A man tore the head off an Adolf Hitler wax figure in symbolic protest against the opening of Madame Tussauds' wax figure exhibition in Berlin on Saturday. The choice to include Hitler in the exhibition of German historical figures led to widespread criticism in German media over recent weeks, but defenders of the plan argued that Hitler's role in German history could not be ignored. In response to the criticism the museum pledged to portray Hitler without glorifying him, as he would have looked shortly before his 1945 suicide. The Nazi leader was depicted hunched over a desk in a dimly lit bunker, sitting beneath a map of Europe on the wall, monitoring the advance of allied troops from the east and west. While museum officials cordoned off the Hitler display so that visitors would not be able to touch, photograph or pose with figure- unlike the rest of the 75 figures in the new collection, police said the 41-year-old man shoved aside two museum employees assigned to protect the exhibit and ripped off the head off the Nazi dictator. The damaged figure has been removed for now, but the museum remained open and officials said they would decide on Monday what to do about the figure. 07/06/08
