The EU has declared war on energy waste -- and on conventional light bulbs. It has been a symbol of the modern industrial era for 130 years. But it is inefficient, and is about to be extinguished. The German firm Paulmann and Dutch multinational Philips are just two of the manufacturers developing more energy-efficient lights. One problem is that the politicians want incandescent bulbs to be phased out more swiftly than industry can deliver alternatives, as our reporter Carmen Meyer discovered.
