Leak at Teesside chemical plant injures 37 workers

A leak at at the BASF chemical plant in Billingham has injured 37 workers, one of them seriously. A substance known as HMD was released in what the Cleveland Fire Brigade described as a major incident. The chemical causes burns and skin irritation. Ten people had to be taken to hospital, the most seriously injured was a man with severe burns. HMD is used in the production of acrylic, nylon fibres and plastics.
