In his latest work, director Fatih Akin tells the story of six people from Germany, whose paths cross both in Germany and Turkey. As with his successful movie HEAD-ON, the German-Turkish director deals with the search for identity, against a backdrop of political and cultural differences. Couples' duel – A film adaptation of a Martin Walser novel In Germany, the novel RUNAWAY HORSE is a literary classic. Martin Walser's psychologically sensitive depiction of a holiday encounter between two old university friends and their wives was made into a film in 1985. For his new adaptation, director Rainer Kaufmann has assembled a brilliant cast: Katja Riemann, Ulrich Noethen, Ulrich Tukur and Petra Schmidt-Schaller. Media criticism in cinema – The new film by Hans Weingartner His film THE EDUKATORS was Germany’s competition entry at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, and it made an international name for Hans Weingartner. His critical look at the generation of 1960s student rebels was seen in 50 countries. In his new film, RECLAIM YOUR BRAIN, which had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Weingartner addresses the ratings-obsessed entertainment machinery of television. We met Weingartner in Berlin and asked him why he doesn’t find making socially critical cinema a contradiction in terms. LUCAS 2007 – Germany's oldest children’s film festival turns 30 Eighteen countries have submitted 200 productions to the LUCAS International Children's Film Festival at Frankfurt's Deutsches Filmmuseum. KINO takes the festival's anniversary as an opportunity to ask about the current state of children’s films. One girl from the children's jury tells us what kids want to see and how they judge movies. And a producer of children’s films tells us of the difficulties and pleasures of making movies for a younger audience.
