Dame Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, Danny Boyle, Sam Mendes and Stephen Daldry are among the Brits receiving Golden Globe nominations. Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is nominated in the Best Motion Picture category alongside The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Reader and Revolutionary Road. And Slumdog also sees Boyle nominated for Best Director, up against Daldry for The Reader, David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon and Mendes for Revolutionary Road. Meanwhile, Ralph Fiennes received two nominations - Best Supporting Actor for The Duchess and Best Supporting Actor In A Mini-Series - while both Dame Judi and Dame Eileen Atkins were recognised for their roles in the drama series Cranford. In the Best Actor category, Leonardo DiCaprio (Revolutionary Road) is up against Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler). Heath Ledger, who died in January, has been given a Best Supporting Actor nomination for The Dark Knight - the film's only Golden Globe nomination. Gangster comedy In Bruges, received a Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination and wins Best Actor nominations in the same category for Irish actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. It faces tough competition from Burn After Reading, Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky, Mamma Mia and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Among the nominees for Best Actress in a film drama were Winslet for Revolutionary Road, Angelina Jolie in Changeling, Meryl Streep in Doubt, Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married and Kristin Scott Thomas in the French film I've Loved You So Long. The Golden Globe Awards are given out annually in January by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are seen as a key indicator of which movies will compete for the world's top film honours, the Oscars, in February.
