Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has submitted his resignation to the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi handed in his resignation on Wednesday evening (February 21) in a meeting with the country's president, Giorgio Napolitano. The President has accepted the resignation and will start consultations with political leaders on Thursday. 'President Giorgio Napolitano has received the Prime Minister Romano Prodi today' said the secretary-general for the Presidential Palace Donato Marra after the meeting. 'In the meeting note was taken of the vote today at the Senate and the resignation of the government has been handed in' Marra said. 'The President has decided to invite the government to remain in power to finish current affairs. The President will hold consultations tomorrow at 1030' he added.
