Israel Maintains High Level Of Alert As Clashes In Lebanon Escalate To Tripoli & Syrian Border

Israel maintains a high level of alert along its northern border as fierce gunbattles in Lebanon entered their sixth day. Heavy clashes have erupted between coalition leader Saad Harriri's followers and anti-government supporters in a region on Lebanon border with Syria. Supporters of Hariri, clashed with anti-government supporters in the al-Masna area .While in Beirut where a tense calm prevails the Lebanese army maintained positions in the city's streets however , in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli on Monday fierce clashes continued and security sources said at least 36 people were killed in Sunday's fighting between Hezbollah and its pro-government Druze opponents east of Beirut. Since the fighting erupted last week 81 people have been killed and over 250 wounded. Lebanese officials said they expected a Qatari-led Arab mission, formed at an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo on Sunday, to visit Beirut on Wednesday. The high-level mission, which both camps in Lebanon have welcomed, is set to hold separate talks with rival leaders and seek an immediate end to the violence and direct talks between them.05/12/08
