Poised for a massive ground offensive, thousands of Israeli forces have begun massing on Lebanon's southern border. Reservists have been mobilised and up to four thousand could be in place within a couple of days. Civilians have been warned to leave the area at once - as Lebanon vowed to defend itself against an invasion force. The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - who will fly to the region on Sunday - said her goal was to create the conditions for a lasting peace. Israeli tanks and troops have already moved further into southern Lebanon and four soldiers died in fierce battles with Hezbollah (or Hisbollah / Hizbollah), while warplanes bombarded the city of Tyre and southern Beirut. Hezbollah fired more rockets at Northern Israel, including Haifa where 19 people were wounded.
