The Defence Secretary Des Browne has declined to back a prediction made by a fellow minister that British forces will have handed over security for southern Iraq by next year. Mr Browne insisted today he didn't want to set a timetable. The news came on the same day as the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, paid a visit to British troops in Basra. They have also been more questions in the United States over American policy in Iraq. A senior state department official condemned its "arrogance and stupidity".
