IRAQ: Civil war threat: Warnings from US General and British Ambassador

Iraq could be heading for civil war - America's top military commander has warned. General John Abizaid has admitted that sectarian violence in Baghdad was now as bad as he'd ever seen it - a message echoed by Britain's outgoing ambassador to Iraq. In a leaked memo to the Prime Minister, obtained by the BBC - William Patey suggested civil war was now more likely than democracy. Tony Blair however insisted again he would "stay the course". The stark assessments came just days after the Pentagon agreed to send three thousand troops more to Iraq.
