International Cricket Council awards ceremony

England captain Andrew Strauss has been snubbed in the International Cricket Council's player of the year awards. Strauss, 32, was shortlisted for both the main cricketer of the year award and the Test player of the year but was overlooked despite a phenomenal personal return and leading England to Ashes glory. Australia's Mitchell Johnson took the main prize, having taken 80 Test wickets in the year and starred with both bat and ball in all formats, while India's Gautam Gambhir was voted Test cricket's number one. The single solo success for England was Claire Taylor being named women's player of the year. Strauss and Stuart Broad were named in the Test team of the year, however, and injured duo Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen got into the composite one-day XI. Left-hander Strauss was man of the series in the 2-1 Test victory over Australia and scored 1323 runs, including six hundreds, at an average of 60.13, in the qualification period, which ran from August 13, 2008, to August 24, 2009.
