Inquiry says Nimrod spy plane crash was preventable

A review into an RAF Nimrod explosion that killed 14 British service personnel has found the crash was "preventable". Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth has told the Commons the report, by lawyer Charles Haddon-Cave, is highly critical of the Ministry of Defence. Mr Ainsworth confirmed two officers, who come in for criticism, have now been moved to staff posts. The RAF will now consider if any "further action" will be taken against them. Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox said the report was a "formidable indictment" and "genuinely shocking", containing information that previous incidents and warning signs had been ignored. The Nimrod spy plane exploded in mid-air near Kandahar in 2006, causing the biggest single loss of life for UK forces since the Falklands War.
