Infolive.tv Minute - Sea Turtles Released By Israeli Jewish and Arab School Children

Three sea turtles were released into the wild yesterday from the fishing dock at Jisr al-Zarka by Israeli Jewish and Arab school children after being rehabilitated at the turtle rescue center in Mikhmoret. Officials from the Israel Nature Parks Authority said the event was intended to increase awareness among local fishermen and other area residents to the danger that nets pose for sea turtles. Among the turtles released yesterday was Krembo, a young turtle weighing 30 kilograms, who was found on the beach between Jisr al-Zarka and Maagan Michael four months ago after a storm at sea. Krembo was suffering from hyperthermia, ill and had stopped eating. Exhausted by the stormy conditions and cold, Krembo was tossed to shore by the waves. At the rescue center he received medication and a new warm-water home, where he gradually recooperated under the devoted care of the volunteers. 06/11/08
