Immigration: Home Office measures to tackle problem of immigrants with expired visas

The Conservatives say plans to send a text message to immigrants when their visa is about to expire means the Home Secretary, John Reid, has given up trying to deport foreigners who never return home. That was just one of a range of measures he announced today to tackle the problem. Lets take a look at the others. As we mentioned, they include sending 'reminder' text to people. Denying driving licences to immigrants who can't prove they're legal. Giving benefits agencies the names of those who shouldn't receive them. Fining employers who hire illegals. And fining landlords - but only those guilty of overcrowding.
