Images of seal cull released

Animal rights activists have released the first graphic pictures of Canada's annual seal cull. The International Fund for Animal Welfare says the practice of clubbing harp seal cubs on the country's Atlantic coast should be banned. The fishermen who make a living selling seal meat and pelts have complained that protesters are endangering their lives by venturing into the icy waters of the Gulf of St Lawrence.Jack Troake said: "They shouldn't be allowed in here. If they don't have a sealing license to got there and hunt seals, they shouldn't be out there playing with other men's lives."The seal hunters have so far managed to kill only a small number of the 275,000 seals marked for slaughter due to icy conditions. The Canadian Government backs the cull, but has advised the hunters to make sure the animals are dead before they begin skinning them. The United States, The Netherlands and Belgium have already banned the distribution of seal products and the European Union is considering a boycott because of humanitarian concerns.© Independent Television News Limited 2008.
