How the Body Works: Sensory Pathways

Some sensory pathways begin at the skin and pass upward, in tracts, or bundles of nerve fibers, within the spinal cord. The pathways cross in the brain stem and pass to the thalamus and sensory cortex, where sensations are perceived. Pain and temperature fibers run together, but touch and pressure run separately, in different tracts.
