Five days after fertilization the implanted ovum secretes the hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin to maintain the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum continues to produce estrogen and progesterone, which suppresses ovulation and menstruation and maintains the uterus in pregnancy. After three months the placenta takes over from the corpus luteum and secretes its own hormones to maintain the conditions for development.
