Over 80 teams and more than a thousand huskies have kicked off the annual week-long dog sled race across Alaska. Get called a 'musher' anywhere else in the world and you might be forgiven for thinking you were being insulted. However, in Alaska you would feel pretty proud as the term is used to describe a dog sled driver. The 34th Iditarod race has kicked off in America's northernmost state. This year the Alaskans will be hoping to take their revenge for last year's loss to the Norwegians. The 2005 Champ isn't racing this year, but his nephew, Bjornar Anderson is and the Alaskans are hoping to take the title back. There is a slight problem for 2006 - not much snow. But the mushers are still gearing up for a good race - anticipating some heavy falls in the next few days. It is a gruelling test of stamina. The finish line is 1,100 miles away in Nome and will take the racers and their dogs over a week to reach.
