Nick Faldo said he is "delighted" and "humbled" after becoming only the second professional British golfer to be knighted. He heads a long line of leading figures from the sporting, entertainment and business worlds receiving awards in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, including veteran horror actor Christopher Lee, TV chef Delia Smith and celebrity hairdresser Vidal Sassoon. There is also recognition for the Royle Family's Sue Johnston, Hollywood star Alan Cumming and 94-year-old former EastEnders actress Anna Wing. And poetry is honoured in the list, with knighthoods for former poet laureate Andrew Motion and outgoing Oxford professor of poetry Christopher Ricks. Faldo, 51, said it was "incredible" to stand alongside the late Sir Henry Cotton, who won three Opens between 1934 and 1948 and is the only other British golfer to be knighted. He said: "I was delighted to hear the news that I will be receiving a knighthood, and am more than a little bit humbled to have been afforded this great honour." Faldo added: "It has come as a real surprise, and the reaction from my children, family and friends has made this a very special moment for me." He is often described as Britain's most successful golfer with a tally of six major championship wins.
