Holidays in Germany- A positive outlook for the island of Usedom

The German domestic tourist branch has so far avoided the worst effects of the economic slowdown. The reason? Germans are travelling less abroad and choosing to go on holiday here instead. The number of hotel stays went up in 2008. Turnover in the industry increased by 7%. And the booking figures for 2009 look positive as well. Holiday makers are moving away from air travel and more likely to make a spontaneous choice to go somewhere by car. The state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern has benefited most from this trend, and the island of Usedom in particular. With four million hotel stays a year Usedom is the holiday region which has profited most from this trend toward Germany. Grit Hofmann discusses the development with guests, hotelliers and tourism managers.
