Hundreds of thousands of Malaysian Hindus have been celebrating the festival of Thaipusam with some bizarre and seemingly painful offerings. Some put skewers through their cheeks, others pierced their bodies with fish hooks. Chanting and dancing devotees rubbed shoulders with tourists as they offered prayers to Lord Murugan at Batu Caves, a prominent Hindu site near the Malaysian capital. Police and first aid workers were on hand during the festivities.
