HEALTH: Midwives: Royal Colleges' report

Every expectant mother should have her own midwife during labour. That's the recommendation from four royal colleges, which say in a report that gynaecologists and obstetricians should be on hand 24 hours a day at hospitals where there are more than six thousand births a year. A survey by the colleges shows that only a quarter of maternity units in England and Wales have one midwife for every woman about to give birth.
