HEALTH: Health Secretary on NHS budget deficit

The Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt has assured MPs that the NHS budget will be balanced by the end of the financial year - saying she'll take personal responsibility for cutting the deficit. Ms Hewitt also told the Commons Health Select Committee that some health trusts had gone into debt because they'd taken on too many doctors and nurses - but dismissed as "exagerated" claims that 20 thousand NHS staff could lose their jobs.
