Greece Anti-Government Protests

Greece Anti-Government Protests

Anti-Government demonstrations have been organized in a number of Greek cities, the participants of which have accused the country’s leadership of carrying out ineffetive actions against the forest fires. In Athens about 8,000 people had gathered in front of the Government building. Some time later the peaceful demonstration turned into mass riots. Police used batons and teargas to disperse crowds. The opposition, mainly socialists, criticizes the Cabinet of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, stating that the government is incapable of handling natural disasters. Meanwhile, fires rage throughout the territory of Greece. The provinces of Elida, Arcadia, Laconia, Messinia and the island of Euboea are in the danger zone. According to Police reports, more than 70 people have been arrested for suspicion of arson.
