The nominees were announced on Wednesday (December 3) night in Los Angeles at a special Grammy Nominations Concert that included performances by Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, Foo Fighters, John Mayer, and B.B. King New Orleans rapper Lil' Wayne received eight nominations in total. The popular British rock quartet Coldplay is in second place with seven nominations. Both are up for album of the year, along with Ne-Yo's "Year of the Gentleman," Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' "Raising Sand," and Radiohead's "In Rainbows." Ne-Yo garnered six nominations, as did Jay-Z and Kanye West. Radiohead, Plant, Krauss, John Mayer and Jazmine Sullivan were next with five. R&B singer Sullivan will vie for best new artist with soulful U.K. singer Adele, versatile Welsh singer Duffy, heartthrob pop trio Jonas Brothers, and country group Lady Antebellum, who just won New Artist of the Year at the recent Country Music Awards. Adele also is up for record of the year -- an award given to the producer -- with "Chasing Pavements." Her competition is Robert Plant and Allison Krauss' "Please Read the Letter," Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love," and M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes." Only two tracks -- "Chasing Pavements" and "Viva la Vida" -- repeat in the song of the year category. The others vying for the songwriter award are "American Boy" by Estelle featuring Kanye West, "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, and "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles. This year for the first time, the Recording Academy unveiled nominations in the top categories during a special concert. In the past, nominations have been announced at an early-morning press conference. The show was co-hosted by 18-year-old Taylor Swift, and LL Cool J. The proceeds of the show will benefit the Grammy Museum, which opens Saturday (December 6) in Downtown L.A. The 51st annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2009 in Los Angeles.
