Campaigners in Britain are joining an international day of action to protest at the military crackdown in Burma.Buddist Monks are leading a march from the Tate Britain gallery in central London to a rally in Trafalgar Square after tying headbands to the Downing Street gates.Myo Thein, of the Burma Campaign UK which is organising the London event, said: "The events in London are designed to show the people of Burma that we stand with them and the generals that we are watching their every move."We also hope the protests will force the UK Government to do more to demand an end to the military crackdown and get the UN Security Council to act."A global day of demonstrations began in Sydney. Rally organiser Maung Maung Than said: "We are united in opposition to the military dictatorship in Burma. It's time for the regime to start reconciliation."A massive demonstration is expected in Bangkok where thousands of Burmese refugees have fled from their neighbouring homeland.Western powers have circulated a draft proposal on the crisis to the UN Security Council which condemned repression by the junta and demanded it free political detainees and begin dialogue with the opposition.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
