New York photographer Bob Gruen has opened his first photo exhibition in Germany on John Lennon's "Years in New York" at a Berlin art gallery on Wednesday (November 16). Less than a month before the 25th anniversary of the killing of the ex-Beatles outside his Manhattan apartment on December 8, 1980, Gruen presented previously unpublished photographs of Lennon and wife Yoko Ono in a new book. "I always felt very lucky and very privileged to be able to work with him because he was admired by so many other people," Gruen told reporters. "But I also work closely and I'm friends with the members of the New York Dolls, with members of The Clash. I was friends with them but not nearly in the same way." "John Lennon lived in New York and in the early 70s we used to go out a lot and drive around. I had a Volkswagen car and I used to drive him around town and go to parties and bars and things. And we just had a lot of fun together," Gruen said. He added that he misses John Lennon every day. "Especially in today's world with so much war and so much fighting and so little common sense I very much miss the voice of John Lennon which was always common sense," he said. "I just wish somebody was around in the world who could express things as well as John and could kind of unite people to live together instead of uniting people to fight each other. There are so few people who are effective at uniting people in a peaceful way," Gruen added.
