Geothermal Energy

To illustrate the decisions on the energy package presented to the European Commission on 23/1/2008, the EC's audiovisual service has produced an infoclip on geothermal energy. The "Sustainable Energy Europe" campaign sets out new objectives for geothermal energy production to be reached between 2005 and 2008, ie 250,000 new heat pumps, 15 new electric power plants and 10 new low energy power plants. Italy was the first country in the world to use geothermal energy, with its first generation plant installed in Larderello, Southern Tuscany in 1911. Larderello's geothermal plants today produce 10 % of the world's supply of geothermal energy, while powering a million Italian households. This infoclip shows the following footage filmed in Italy: -hot water springs near Larderello -small farm using geothermal energy -open vent showing the power of hot steam -geothermal plants producing electricity -greenhouse heated by geothermal energy.
