"Gargoyles" (1972) 8 of 8

"GARGOYLES" (1972) 74 minutes (European theatrical version) -- Starring Cornel Wilde, Jennifer Salt, Bernie Casey, and Scott Glenn. Emmy-winning Special Effects by Stan Winston & Milt Rice. Directed by Bill L. Norton. PLOT: A terrifying tale of ancient evil unfolds as anthropologist Mercer Boley (Cornel Wilde) and his daughter (Jennifer Salt) battle to save the Earth from a clan of grotesque demon-like gargoyles they've discovered in the Arizona desert. The gargoyles have waited centuries to conquer the earth and destroy all humans -- can Boley and his daughter save themselves and the world? INFO: "Gargoyles" is an iconic and frightful monster/horror flick from the early 1970s. The brilliant costumes and special effects were cutting edge, despite the fact the movie was made for lower-budget U.S. television. "Gargoyles" is consistently rated as one of the scariest horror pictures of the time. Yet, even decades later, the movie's action remains noteworthy -- the attacks on the cabin, the car, and the motel are heart-stopping, as are the first glimpses of the gargoyles in the eerie desert darkness. (Don't watch this movie alone at night!) The movie's Emmy-winning special effects were created by Stan Winston ("Jurassic Park," "Terminator 2") and Milt Rice (1956's "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"). Screen legend Cornel Wilde stars as the steady Dr. Boley. As the head gargoyle, veteran actor Bernie Casey steals his scenes. Also look under the makeup for Richard Moll (TV's "Night Court") as Goliath. This version is the longer European theatrical release.
