Yet, even decades later, the movie's action remains noteworthy -- the attacks on the cabin, the car, and the motel are heart-stopping, as are the first glimpses of the gargoyles in the eerie desert darkness. The movie's Emmy-winning special effects were created by Stan Winston ("Jurassic Park," "Terminator 2") and Milt Rice (1956's "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"). Screen legend Cornel Wilde stars as the steady Dr. Boley. As the head gargoyle, veteran actor Bernie Casey steals his scenes.
