Fuelling the future: Promoting Biomass heating in the EU

At their Spring 2007 meeting, EU leaders made a commitment to delivering 20 percent of the EU's final energy consumption from renewable energy sources by 2020. Based on these commitments, the European Commission will bring forward in January 2008 proposals for new EU laws on energy, including binding renewable energy targets. Each Member State will have the freedom to determine the best renewable energy mix for its own circumstances, but they must also establish national action plans outlining their specific targets for each renewable energy sector - electricity, biofuels and heating and cooling. To coincide with this initiative, the EU's Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) programme has produced a film looking at the question of heating systems fuelled by environmentally sound 'biomass'.
