A 16-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of the murder of 11-year-old Rhys Jones has been released on bail. The football-mad youngster lay dying in his mother's arms after being shot in the neck after football practice as he crossed the car park of The Fir Tree public house in Croxteth, Liverpool.Police are hunting a hooded youth who escaped on a black BMX bike. The latest arrest brings the total number of those held in connection with Rhys's murder to 17.The driver of a red car who may have witnessed the murder when heading through Fir Tree Drive North at about 7.40pm on August 22 is being urged to come forward and help the investigation.Police suspect the motorist may have seen a cyclist leave the scene and head for nearby Dam Wood.Earlier, Rhys's father Stephen, 44, and his brother Owen, 17, took the youngster's place at school assembly on what would have been his first day at Fazakerley High School in Liverpool. The Everton fan's funeral will be held on Thursday. On Saturday, Rhys 11-year-old friends Sean Geoghegan and Jamie Dorrian, who were with him when he was shot, will take centre stage at the England v Israel football match. One of the boys will hold captain John Terry's hand and the other will hold the hand of the England goalkeeper. They and their families will also get tickets to the game.Detective Superintendent Dave Kelly said: "At this stage we are looking at a number of motives, but the strongest line of inquiry is that Rhys was the accidental victim of a targeted attack against others."We also can't rule out that this situation involved local opposing factions."© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
