For decades, the Great Lakes Region in Central Africa has been rampaged by civil war, ethnic tensions and violent conflict. In 1996 "Esperance", a sports association for the youth was founded at Kimisagara Youth Centre in Kigali/Rwanda. Its aim is to teach young people in the region peaceful resolution of conflicts by the means of football. The rules are simple: One ball, made of banana plant leaves, one team consisting of 6 players - 3 boys and 3 girls. Only the goals scored by the girls count. There is no referee, the players themselves are in charge of fair-play. If necessary, the teams have to solve conflicts themselves. Our goals: Reconciliation, Social inclusion, gender equality, fight against AIDS. Association des Jeunes Sportifs de Kigali (Esperance) and German Development Service (DED).
