Nick Faldo has left Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke out of his Ryder Cup team by picking Ian Poulter and Paul Casey. Justin Rose and Oliver Wilson of England both qualified automatically along with Soren Hansen of Denmark on the final day because Nick Dougherty, the only player who could overtake them in the rankings, did not win the Johnnie Walker Classic. Faldo chose Poulter and Casey as his wild card picks to join qualifiers Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Graeme McDowell. Faldo revealed he chose Poulter because he was impressed by the way he fought back to finish as runner-up in The Open at Royal Birkdale. He said: "Ian is a very determined guy, I love his attitude and what he did at The Open, that back nine he played with the intention to win and had that emotional feeling. "I've been watching Paul play and he has been playing absolutely the best through the summer." Montgomerie was widely tipped to be selected because he has an exellent record in the Ryder Cup, having played in the competition eight times without losing a singles match.
