EU crackdown on misleading airline ticket websites

During the week of 24 September 2007, 15 EU Member States took part for the first time in a "Sweep" initiative coordinated by the European Union through the Consumer Protection Cooperation network (CPC). This network started operations in December 2006 after a preparatory work. The Commission proposed to carry out this first joint initiative as a pilot for future joint exercises. This time, the target was air ticket selling sites. The sweep action consisted in supervising web pages of the same sector to verify which ones carried out the European legislation of consumer protection. The main purpose was to identify practices infringing national and European consumer protection law, notably misleading information and unfair contract terms, as the clear condition of the final price, the conditions of the offer or the general contract terms. Afterwards, the European Commission and the Member states warned the enterprises who did not carry out the legislation. The first part of this newspackage was recorded at the Belgian Federal Public Minister for Economy, SMEs, Medium classes and Energy. The sweep in Belgium took place under the supervision of the General Direction of Enforcement and Mediation. The second part of this packet is filmed at the Brussels International airport, in Zaventem.
