ETHIOPIA: Kidnapped Britons 'safe' according to Ethiopian government

"Safe and secure" and in "good condition" - but in the hands of unknown kidnappers. This is how Ethiopia's Foreign Minister has described the Britons taken hostage eight days ago in the remote Afar region. The Foreign Office said it was keeping the families of the hostages informed about the latest developments, but couldn't verify the Ethiopian government's claims. The hostages work at the British Embassy in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and were on an organised trip to the Afar region. The tourists and their guides were taken from Hamedali close to the Danekil depression last Thursday - March 1st. On March the 5th, the Foreign office said pictures of their bullet-ridden abandoned vehicles were "distressing" . Now the Ethiopian Foreign Minister has said they're safe, but he couldn't confirm reports from nomads that the group is across the border inside Eritrea in Wayima.
