ENVIRONMENT: Transport tax mooted over increased carbon emissions

The seventy-mile an hour speed limit on British motorways should be slashed to help curb greenhouse gas emissions, according to MPs. The Commons Environmental Audit committee said taxes on air travel and high-polluting cars should also be raised, while the cleanest vehicles could be tax-free. The committee claims transport is the only sector of the economy where carbon emissions have consistently gone up since 1990.
