ENVIRONMENT: Insurance warning to homeowners as government flood defence policy questioned

Insurance companies warned homeowners living in high risk flood areas that they may no longer be able to insure them because the government is not spending enough on flood defences. The warning came as the head of the Environment Agency appeared before a committee of MPs to give evidence about its handling of the floods of summer 2007. Baroness Young faced questions about whether the agency needs a complete overhaul. It has also emerged that different Whitehall departments are reponsible for different types of flood.
