ENVIRONMENT: Council's trial electronic chips to monitor waste in household bins

Councils have been trialling electronic chips in household bins. They monitor how much waste each household is producing, the idea being that more home-owners will be encouraged to recycle. But civil liberties groups are furious at the kind of data that can be collected - and what unscrupulous sorts can do with it. One area where the scheme has just been trialled is Woking.
