ENVIRONMENT: Chinese dolphin becomes extinct

The Yangze River dolphin has become the first large animal to become compIetely extinct in fifty years. Conservationists have confirmed that the Baiji dolphin, unique to China, has gone forever after years of numbers in steady decline. One in ten of the world's population live in the the Yangtze River basin and China's surging economy placed too many pressures on the river to support its human population and the dolphin. In particular, the noise of heavy river traffic destroyed the dolphin's ability to communicate with sonar. Scientists estimate that one in four of mammals are in danger of extinction.
