ENVIRONMENT: Beached cargo ship: Fears of oil and chemical spillage on Devon coast

For more than 24 hours, coastguards have held their breath, fearing that at any moment an environmental disaster could hit the shores of Devon. A stranded cargo ship, MSC Napoli, has beached just a mile off the English coast. It has started to leak fuel prompting concerns it could dump over three thousand tons of oil into the sea. On top of that, its cargo contains some potentially dangerous chemicals, and if it capsizes these too will end up in the water. An 8 kilometre sheen of fuel has already surrounded the stricken vessel. Environmentalists are worried about the impact it could have on the Devon coastline, a unique habitat that is a protected World Heritage Site.
