England back on form in Chennai

Andrew Strauss has claimed his 13th Test century in the first Test against India in Chennai. Both teams observed a minute's silence before play in memory of the victims of last month's terrorist attacks in Mumbai. England captain Kevin Pietersen won the toss and chose to bat amid tight security with soldiers walking around the roof of the stadium. That did not seem to distract England's opening batsmen Strauss and Alastair Cook. They built a century partnership for the second Test in a row, reaching 118 before Cook was caught at mid-on for 52. Ian Bell was trapped lbw for 17 but Strauss soon lifted England's spirits by reaching 100 in the final session of the first day. Strauss was caught and bowled by Amit Mishra for 123. At the close, England were 229 for five.
