ENERGY: Power cuts across Europe: Government plans for better gas storage facilities

Millions of homes were plunged into darkness this weekend - from northwest Germany to parts of Spain - from France to Austria. The European Commission has called for an investigation into the mass blackouts, amid calls for a common energy policy across the continent. No lights out here - but Britain's energy minister has declared the days of cheap, plentiful gas are over. Last winter a fire at the country's only major gas store sent prices for consumers soaring by a third in just one day. Now the government has said it wants to shortcut planning proceedures to help companies to build the storage facilities the country badly needs.
