Energy: Isle of Eigg

Since February 2008, the isle of Eigg, a small island located off the West coast of Scotland has become a unique model of energy self-sufficiency, producing its own electricity by a combination of wind turbines, solar panels and hydropower. The system, set up by the Eigg Heritage Trust, supplies more than 95% of Eigg's annual energy needs linking a total of 45 households, 6 community buildings and 20 businesses over a 6-mile high voltage network. Households are allowed to draw up to 5 kW of electricity at any time, while businesses can draw up to 10 kw. A battery storage system and two diesel generators provide backup.
