Don't Dream of Anybody But Me - Mel Tormé with Count Basie

Don't Dream of Anybody But Me - Mel Tormé with Count Basie

Count Basie and his band back 39yo Mel Tormé in this performance of "Don't Dream of Anybody But Me" (aka "L'il Darlin'.") Several people have asked about the name of this song. "Li'l Darlin'" was written by Neil Hefti originally for Count Basie - and had no words. Several lyricists have added words to the song; I'm not sure who wrote the words for this version - perhaps Mel Tormé. In some cases, the resulting song is still called "L'il Darlin'." However, when Mel Tormé sings this on his albums (and on the Judy Garland Show), he names it "Don't Dream of Anybody But Me." This recording took place shortly after Count Basie's famous pairings with Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Available on the 1963 DVD "The Judy Garland Show: Volume 2." Mel regularly wrote songs and arrangements for Judy's show - this recording is from one of his two appearances on the show as a performer.
