Ranking Member Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) stated that she didn't like the idea of a merger and felt that more competition is better. She went on to state that in regard to mergers, it is not the role of Congress to impart policy on the airlines. The CEOs of Delta and Northwest were back on Capitol Hill today to defend the proposed merger between the two legacy carriers before the Senate Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security Subcommittee. The pair made appearances before both House and Senate judiciary committees on April 24. The message from the CEOs remained the same -- the merger is good for passengers and employees in the wake of skyrocketing fuel costs. Lawmakers continued to express skepticism towards the merger and what it would mean for air service to small communities, customer service, ticket costs and the employees of the two airlines.
