Spending on military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq has gone up to nearly two billion pounds in 2007, according to a report by the House of Commons Defence Select Committee. It says it is not surprising that the cost of operations in Afghanistan has risen 39 per cent as British forces fight the Taliban there. It is in Iraq where the committee raises questions. It says spending is due to fall by just 5 per cent in 2008, while the number of troops is set to halve to two and a half thousand.
