Cord blood bank to be launched

A pioneering blood bank which stores the cells from umbilical cords is being opened. The Anthony Nolan Cell Therapy Centre in Nottingham is being hailed as a lifeline for those suffering blood diseases, such as leukaemia. The ground-breaking stem cell technology has already been used to save British leukaemia sufferers like four-year-old Eva Winston-Hart. Eva struggled to find a suitable bone marrow donor for her life-threatening condition, but was saved by an anonymous stem cell donor from America. UK cell donations, taken from the umbilical cords of new born babies, can be made at King's College Hospital. Eight-month-old Darcey Judge, who met Eva at the central London hospital, is one of the UK's first young donors. Leukaemia charity the Anthony Nolan Trust wants to collect 50,000 cord blood donations and will be gradually increasing the number of hospitals across the UK able to accept donations. It is appealing for £27 million over the next five years to achieve this.
