After spending 20 years in the army, the personal traits that advanced his military career would propel him forward in a different field. His competitive drive, determination, meticulous attention to detail, and the thrill of seeking new challenges describe not just Sergeant Davis, but also the attributes of a soon to emerge barbecue champion. Faced with military retirement at the young age of 37, and having recently overcome cancer, Mike Davis happened into barbecue competition by chance. Helping out a friend at the Arkansas State Championship in 1993, he thought he was entering into "some kind of backyard deal". Instead, he entered into a passion that defines his life today.
